You Don’t Know the Sacrifices I Made – Dr. Jamal H. Bryant – Sunday, October 26

Primary Text: Numbers 7:11–12
Big Idea: God honors sacrifice. The ones who lead in sacrifice are the ones God lets step into the miracle first.

Scripture

  • Numbers 7:11–12 — Each day a leader brings an offering for the dedication of the altar; first was Nahshon son of Amminadab, of Judah.
  • Related: Ephesians 3:20; Joshua 1:3; themes of first fruits, dedication, and praise.

Sermon Title

“You don’t know the sacrifices I made.”

Opening Frame

  • Being first often isn’t about titles; it is about doing what you are called to do in love and obedience.
  • Illustration: Freedom House Ambulance (Pittsburgh, 1967–1975) trained unemployed Black men as paramedics. Their uncelebrated model became the national EMS blueprint.
Point: Trailblazers may not be recognized, but their obedience saves lives.

Thesis

  • Your calling is stronger than your qualifications. God is calling first responders in the Spirit.
  • It is an emergency to activate what God placed in you. Delayed obedience disempowers people who need what is in you.

Exhortation: The Emergency List

Move now:

  • Start the business; apply for the grant; file the paperwork.
  • Build an additional stream of income; cut dead weights; pursue the dream.
  • Enroll back in school; move from stagnation; end unhealthy relationships.
  • Surrender to God; turn down temptation; pray in the night; fast; revisit what you wrote.

Sacrifice Before Spotlight

  • Many rush to be first to be blessed; few rush to be first to sacrifice.
  • At Bethesda, the first into the water was healed. In crises, God looks for first responders.
  • Evangelical critique: Some want a cross with a flag, not a cross with blood. No cross, no crown.

Judah Leads: Praise and Sacrifice

  • Nahshon leads Judah — the praising camp.
  • Lesson: Stretching myself is equivalent to stretching my hands. Breaking a sweat is like breaking into a shout.
  • Worship is more than background music; it is a lifestyle of uncomfortable obedience.

Christlike Pattern

  • Jesus, in pain on the cross, still cried with a loud voice.
  • We bring the sacrifice of praise even when we do not feel like it.

The Reward Principle

  • God will not let you place something on the altar without placing something on your future.
  • Sacrifice is the one arena where God says, “Test Me.” The blessing will eclipse the sacrifice.

Cost of Authenticity

  • It is too expensive to be someone else. Progress carries a price and is not the same as popularity.
  • Lead only if you are willing to sacrifice, not to be seen.

Hidden Givers

  • Few churches or children are named Nahshon. Sacrificial givers rarely get plaques or platforms.
  • Heaven, not headlines, keeps the record.

Rabbinic Note and Application

  • Rabbinic tradition records that when Moses raised his staff and the Red Sea parted, Nahshon stepped in first.
  • Application: The giver steps into the miracle first. Those under Judah’s banner — the praisers — went through first.
  • Promise: Every place the sole of your foot treads, God gives. Expect God to bless you publicly for sacrifices made privately.

Memorable Quotes

  • Albert Einstein: “The person who follows the crowd will never go further than the crowd.”
  • Denzel Washington: “Do what you have to do until you can do what you want to do.”

Declarations and Benediction Highlights

  • May the last be first.
  • May borrowers become lenders.
  • May the tail become the head.
  • May the sacrificial become more than conquerors.
  • May God make your name great.
  • Now unto Him who is able to do exceedingly, abundantly above all we ask or think.

Altar Call Emphasis

  • Walk through the opened Red Sea; New Birth is your promise.
  • Join the church family; step into freedom, creativity, and identity in God.
  • Litany: Walk with God and He will walk with me; Talk with God and He will talk with me; Listen to God and He will listen to me; Build for God and He will build for me; Love God because He first loved me.

Application Checklist

  • Identify one concrete sacrifice this week tied to your assignment.
  • Act on one item from the Emergency List within 48 hours.
  • Practice a sacrifice of praise daily, regardless of feelings.
  • Bring canned goods each Sunday in November and invite a friend.
  • Pray: “Lord, make me a first responder in faith; let my private sacrifice unlock public miracles.”

Small Group Discussion Starters

  1. Where have you sensed an “emergency” to obey, and what has delayed you?
  2. How has God already honored a past sacrifice in your life?
  3. In what ways can your praise lead your household or circle through their Red Sea?
  4. What practical sacrifices can you make to support King’s Table and neighbors in need this month?

Key Takeaway

Be a Nahshon. Lead in sacrifice. Praise while you stretch. Step first into what God opens, and watch Him mark your future with miracles.
