We have all heard the saying, “If you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans.” Life often unfolds differently than we expect. Sometimes protection is disguised as rejection or delay. We can become so committed to our own plans that we fail to submit them to God first, and that can delay the very blessings we seek. As believers, we know God’s plans are to prosper us, not harm us, so why do we insist on imposing our own timelines, expectations, and goals? In this season, we must trust that God’s adjustments are not punishment—they are preparation for something better.
Too often, we plan based on what we can see rather than on what God has promised. In doing so, we settle for less than His best. Proverbs 19:21 reminds us: “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but the Lord’s purpose prevails.” God plans from perfect knowledge, while people plan from limited sight and emotion.
When God adjusts our lives, it is always for our good. Sometimes, He adjusts to protect us. Closed doors may be shielding us from harm we cannot yet see. Sometimes, He adjusts to prepare us, using seasons of waiting to build character and sharpen our hearts to hear His voice. Other times, He adjusts to redirect us, leading us toward something greater than what we originally asked for.
Scripture gives many examples of divine adjustment. Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers, yet what looked like betrayal became the path to leadership and purpose. Moses was raised in a palace, then sent to the wilderness before leading Israel. His delay became preparation. Naomi and Ruth endured deep loss, but through obedience and relocation, they found restoration and blessing.
Our response to God’s adjustments reveals our spiritual fruit. We are called to trust Him even when life does not make sense. Faith does not require full understanding; it requires surrender. We must release our own plans and allow God to direct our steps. When life feels out of alignment, ask God to show you what His adjustments are producing. Pray for wisdom, endurance, and the strength to remain faithful in the process.
Signs that God’s adjustments are working for your good include greater peace, stronger faith, growth in patience, clearer direction, and new opportunities. Be encouraged in seasons of waiting. Delays are not denials. God is working behind the scenes for your advancement. What you may have lost could be leading you to what you truly need. Every adjustment has purpose when placed in God’s hands. When God changes the plan, it is because He has something better than what you had in mind.
